Blues Hall of Fame Kiosk & CMS

The Issue

The Blues Foundation (a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and supporting blues music), was looking for an engaging, multi-media way to educate their Blues Hall of Fame exhibit visitors about past and present inductees and to showcase these legendary performers and their work.

The Request

Mind Over Data was contracted to create an interactive touchscreen experience, which would allow patrons to search for Blues Hall of Fame award recipients by induction category (Performer, Individual, Literature, Song and Album) and induction year, using a timeline scrolling feature. Each honoree was expected to have an entry detail screen with biographical text, still photos, audio and video clips (if available) and links to applicable literature and influencing artists with their own entry detail screens. It was also requested that the new system provide Blues Foundation staff with the means to manage all data and media files without outside assistance.

The Solution

Mind Over Data provided the Blues Foundation with a custom, database-driven kiosk software application, database and Content Management System (CMS). The custom kiosk software runs the animated "attract" screen (which displays random award recipient information to pique visitors’ interest) and the "search by" and "entry detail" screens. The custom database stores all the data and media files needed for search and display within the kiosk software, and the custom CMS provides the client with the ability to easily add, update, delete entries and content within the system. Mind Over Data also designed the user interface for the kiosk, which includes an ADA accessible button to make the exhibit more welcoming and usable for all patrons, and populated
all provided content into the database via the CMS.
